Vulnerable Groups Program
HFH Zambia provides appropriate, subsidized housing solutions to vulnerable groups in Zambia and it specifically concentrates on orphaned and vulnerable children (OVC) and their caregivers. Children in Zambia are one of the groups at greatest risk to contract HIV. Their vulnerability as children puts them at a greater risk of abuse, especially sexual abuse. Statistics show that more than 1 in every 7 adults is living with HIV, which has resulted in about 600,000 children being orphaned due to AIDS.
Habitat works with the local community to build simple, decent homes and also provides a ventilated improved pit latrine toilet, mosquito nets. Each house is also protected by a legally-enforceable will ensuring that property grabbing does not take place. The children have the legal right to remain in the home even if their caregiver dies. Habitat houses are made of cement blocks, concrete floors and iron sheet roofs. Without any major maintenance, these homes will last for more than 20 years, keeping children and their families safe and healthy. The core services in this program or projects are:
